Earth Hour 2009

Street Corner with SmokeEarth Hour is an initiative sponsored by World Wildlife Federation that asks everyone around the world to turn off their lights for 1 hour on March 28th at 8:30PM. The idea was established to raise awerness and allows everyone around the world to participate. You don’t have to send in money or show up at a specific location to participate, simply place yourself at 8:30PM on March 28th where the lights are turned off.

Graceful BirdRegardless of how you feel about global warming, we’re milking this planet for energy 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Windmills, solar energy, clean gas emission are all wonderful notions, however, we’re not utilizing them to their full potential just yet. The idea of existing and going on about your day with a tiny inconvenience of having the light turned off for one hour symbolizes that  we’re aware of global warming, and the unfortunate reality that we’re continuing to pollute this planet exponentially. Well, at least thats the way I understand this initiative.

Pier in Salem, MassIt’s going to be quite a site seeing Manhattan skyscrapers across the Hudson with their lights off for that 1 hour. I would disagree with those that scold anyone for not participating, however, if you find yourself on that day with nothing immediate that would require you to have your light on, join in, and be a part of something with good intensions.
